Tulla 4.7 Kilmaley 1-2

On Sunday, the above well-known teams met at the old trysting place at Carrahan in the first ties for the County. Championship- Tulla did not play it’s first team, still it put a hardy batch of wielders of the ‘camán’ into the field which proved too much for the Kilmaley men, although the latter were a fine body of young men. Not withstanding the intense heat of the day, the men took the ground promptly to time and Kilmaley, playing with the wind and the sun also favouring them, quickly scored a point with Pyne’s assistance the Tulla back play being loose.
Mid-play followed in which Canny scored a point for Tulla, D. Crowe quickly scoring again and then Mick Halpin scored a goal for Tulla. Higgins was now playing well in the forward division. A splendid puck by P. McMahon resulted in a point for Kilmaley and then some brilliant Kilmaley play brought the ball into Tulla territory and a wicked onslaught was made on the ground but Tulla back play was superb and defied all attempts.
O’Brien soon after scored a goal for Tulla and another point by Meehan succeeded some scientific play in neutral ground.
McCann on the right wing now did some hard work for Kilmaley and was ably assisted by D’Arcy and a fine puck by Pyne scored a magnificent point for Kilmaley, very quickly followed by a goal. In the final ten minutes of the second half the play was in midfield, Kilmaley pressing their opponents very strongly but somehow playing a bad scoring game. First blood was drawn by Ryan for Tulla with a fine point from central ground. O’Brien soon after scored a point and P. McMahon got a goal, notwithstanding a splendid defence by O’Grady. Ryan then made another point for Tulla and soon after there was a point registered. When time was called the score was Tulla 4.7, Kilmaley 1-2.
The game does not fairly represent the even character of the play, for while Tulla never missed a chance of scoring, Kilmaley failed to profit by many opportunities.. They pressed Tulla very closely throughout and with more training should turn out most formidable opponents.
The referee was Mr. C. Kearney and the flag stewards were Messer’s. P. Gallagher and S. Coghlan. Members of the County Committee at.the ground were C. Kearney, County Secretary; J. Coghlan, Ennis and J. Coghlan, Tulla. The teams were:
