KILMALEY'S JUNIOR TITLE OF Nov 3rd 1963

Kilmaley 8-8 Meelick1-1

Prior to Kilmaley's Senior hurling title on September 8th, 1985, one of the most remembered matches involving the parish was when Kilmaley's Junior hurling team won the county title by defeating Meelick in the final. This match was played at Tulla on Sunday, Nov. 3, 1963, before a very large attendance.
From the very beginning, Kilmaley's superior fitness began to manifest itself. This, together with speed, combination and enthusiasm never allowed Meelick very much into the game.
Despite a cross-wind which helped Meelick in the first half, it was Kilmaley who settled better and had scored two goals within ten minutes and added a further 1-4 to lead 3-4 to 0-0 at the interval. With Kilmaley well on top the second half just looked a formality and that was the way it turned out. Kilmaley ran out easy winners on a score of 8-8 to 1-1.
Frank McTigue, a native of Kilnamona b'lt playing for Kilmaley in '63 scored 2-0. He was a cousin of former World Light-Heavyweight Boxing Champion, Mike McTigue, and had won a Junior B title with Kilnamona when they beat Tubber 8-7 to 4-3 in 1957. The rest of the scores were shared mainly between the McMahon brothers - Michael, Joe and Jim, Jimmy Hennessy and Dome Lynch.
It was an all-round excellent team performance from Kilmaley but special mention went to the performance of the McMahon brothers, Frank McTigue, and Donie Lynch, whose performances at mid-field and in attack caused Meelick constant problems. The combination between Michael McMahon and Johnny Mclnerney at mid-field was one of the highlights of the victory. All the forwards were fast and combined well, hence the high-scoring by Kilmaley.
In defence, M. V. Hehir made some dramatic saves early in the game. In front of him were Sean Fitzpatrick 'flown in from Holland for the game), Michael Cullinan and Paddy Crawford, captain, were a solid full-back line. The half back line of Tom Keane, Kevin Griffey and John Doohan also made a big contribution. So solid was the defence that Meelick only got their two scores in the final ten minutes. These were a goal from a 21 yard free by Gerry Ryan and a point from play.
Final score - Kilmaley 8-8, Meelick 1-1.
